Gaming As Storytelling
Language Arts, Grades 6-8
My natural inclination for integrating technology is with science. Language arts is more challenging for me to integrate, which is why I chose this video. The teacher provided students with a different way to apply and illustrate state-mandated concepts. This allows students to apply these skills and concepts in a meaningful way.
Dollars for Darfur
Social Studies, Grades 6-8
Similar to Gaming as Storytelling, Social Studies technology integration is an area where I need to improve. This lesson format allowed students to understand a historical event in modern contexts. What I like most about this video is how the teacher was able to show that what they learned about regarding the Holocaust was still relevant to Darfur and other unfortunate genocidal acts that are current. It allows students to relate current events to what they have read in social studies and to take an active role in spreading the news and coming up with ways to help others.
Fish Facts
Science, K-2
What I enjoyed most about this is the collaboration that is encouraged between the students. Here, students learned from the teacher together and were able to extend that learning by learning from one another through technology. The students worked to gather facts, which was part of the lesson, and then decide how they would like to share what they had learned by using technology.
Iditarod Project
Math, 3-5
Students were responsible for using research skills to gather information and create a budget based on the information they gathered. Throughout this lesson or activity, students use technology in a variety of meaningful ways: to gather information, organize it, and share it. I chose this example of integrated technology because of how it demonstrates using math and technology across the curriculum.
Magazine Publishing
Language Arts, 6-8
I really enjoyed the level of engagement and collaboration this lesson required. Spread over two weeks, students were responsible for every aspect of creating a class magazine from funding, to layout, and content. Students also had to determine which software to use and how to substitute software based on what was available. By placing the responsibility of the project on the students, students could be engaged; it enhanced their experience, and extended their knowledge beyond what a typical lesson might have done. They will leave this experience with a better understanding and appreciation of what goes into print publications.
